Episode 26 – Doers of the Word on Encouragement

Posted in: Show Notes

In today’s episode, we are discussing the topic of encouragement! This is a fun one ladies because who doesn’t like to be encouraged?  As we continue in our Doers of the Word series, we look at what does the Word calls us to when it comes to the way we encourage others.  Not just complimenting and supporting each other, but pointing each other back to the ultimate hope we have in Jesus.

  • Romans 15:1-7
    • The core word of “encouragement” is “courage”
    • The definition of “encouragement”: A quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, or pain without fear.
    • Hope is what allows us to face fear.
    • “Discouragement” is when hope is drained and taken out from a situation
  • The act of encouraging is to give support, give confidence, or give hope.
  • As believers, our hope is the Gospel. Our hope is in Jesus.
  • When scripture tells us to encourage, it is sharing the hope we have in Jesus to continue fighting the fight.
  • Wordly encouragement vs. Biblical encouragement
    •  Biblical encouragement gives Gospel hope.
  • Romans 15:7 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
  • Encouragement vs. compliments
    • “Your hair looks awesome” is kind, but it doesn’t point back to the hope of scripture.
  • Romans 15:4-5 says, “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus…”
    • Encouragement is based in Scripture.
    • The Word of God is true encouragement we can rely on.
  • Romans 1:12 says, “…that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.”
    • Our faith can be encouraging to one another.
    • But our flesh desires to feel “supportive” at times and just say what is easy.
  • Encouragement is the opposite of gossip of slander.
  • Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let not let any corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such  as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
  • 1 Thess. 5:11 says, “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”
  • 1 Thess. 5:14 says, “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.”
  • Other verses on encouragement:
    • 1 Thess. 1:9
    • 1 Thess. 2:3-4
    • 1 Thess. 2:11
    • Hebrews 3:13
  • Exhorting: encouragement along with the instruction of truth.
  • Life application: Where do we go from here in regards to encouragement?
    • Stop gossiping.
    • Tame your tongue.
    • Speak or send scripture to people.
    • Point out characteristics of God or fruits of the Spirit that you see in others.

Our hope through the Gospel is our inheritance in Heaven!  We hope you take the time to encourage others in this truth this week.  We love you and are praying for you as you practice DOING these things.
