Episode 27 SHOW NOTES

Scripture tells us in Titus 1:2 that God never lies.  In seeking to be more like God and be doers of the Word we seek to be truthful in everything we say and do.  In this episode we address the sin of lying and what it looks like to walk in the light!

  • Lying: an intentionally false statement.
  • Statistics on lying: https://brandongaille.com/24-nose-growing-statistics-on-lying/
    • By the age of four, 90% of children have learned the concept of lying.
    • 60% of adults cannot have a ten minute conversation without lying at least once.
    • When meeting someone new, the average person lies two-three times in ten minutes.
    • “Nothing I’m fine” is the most common lie.
  • If you are willing to lie in the small moments, how much more would you be willing to lie in the big moments when you want to avoid consequences?
  • What does Scripture say about lying?
    • Ephesians 4:17-25
      • Vs. 22, “to put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires…”
      • Vs. 25, “Therefore having put away falsehood…”
      • “To put off” and “to put away” have the same meaning in this context.
      • Falsehood and lying is part of our old way of life.  Now as Believers, this is something we are to flee from.
    • 1 Peter 1:16
      • If God is holy, then we desire to be holy like Him as well.
    • Proverbs 6:16-17
    • Proverbs 12:22
    • Proverbs 12:19
    • Proverbs 20:17
    • Proverbs 21:6
  • Scripture is clear on how the Lord feels about lying.  So why do we still lie?
    • You feel like it makes your life easier.
    • You didn’t plan on lying.
    • Its convenient.
    • It makes you look better.
    • Avoiding a penalty in a moment.
  • 1 John 1:6-7 says, “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”
    • Struggling with something and not sharing it is keeping it in the dark.
    • One of the biggest fears in bringing things into the light is the fear of not being forgiven.
    • Jesus is faithful to forgive us of sin! This doesn’t mean there won’t be earthly consequences.
    • We “practice the truth” in the big moments and the little moments.
  • Darkness breeds sin, and sin breeds death.
  • Titus 1:1-2
    • God NEVER lies.
  • John 8:44
    • Satan is the “Father of lies.”
    • When we lie, it is coming from an evil place, not a holy place.
  • How should we look different?
    • We allow our eyes to be open, and we claim the moments where we fall short.
    • We correct ourselves in the moment.
    • Start with the small things.
    • Acknowledge that you are not perfect, and practice confession!

We hope this episode is helpful for you and pushes you towards TRUTH! Grab a friend this week and listen to this episode together, and use it as an ice-breaker to confess any of the small or big moments you have fallen into the temptation of lying.  We love you and are praying for you as you strive to be holy as He is holy!
